SNAC-K presents 25 years of aging research to Region Stockholm’s Seniorvårdsberedningen

SNAC-K principal investigator Amaia Calderón-Larrañaga and vice-PI Anna-Karin Welmer visited Seniorvårdsberedningen at Region Stockholm on 11 December 2025 to present key results from 25 years of research within the Swedish National study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K). Seniorvårdsberedningen is a political committee under Region Stockholm’s Health and Medical Services Board that prepares and follows up issues related to senior health and care, and serves as an important forum where research can inform policy and the development of integrated health and social care for older people.

In their presentation, “Det friska åldrandet – 25 års forskning från SNAC-K-studien”, they showed how older people in Stockholm are doing today and how health in old age can be promoted throughout the life course. They highlighted that while multimorbidity is common in older age, many people maintain relatively good health and function up to about 80 years, and that dementia incidence has decreased over time, likely linked to better cardiovascular health. They also discussed how lifestyle, social factors, and environmental exposures such as diet, physical activity, social networks, muscle strength and air pollution influence health and dementia risk in late life. Finally, they presented SNAC-K tools such as the Health Assessment Tool (HAT) and the fall-risk screening tool FIF, and discussed with members of Seniorvårdsberedningen how these and other research findings can support prevention, guide primary care, and inform the planning of sustainable, person-centered senior care in Region Stockholm.
